Lin Shaye as Magda in There’s Something About Mary: The Neighbor Nobody Forgets
Magda is the sort of supporting character who lingers longer than most leads. In There’s Something About Mary (1998), Lin Shaye plays Mary’s chain-smoking, deeply sunburned neighbor in Miami. She is eccentric, fiercely loyal and impossible to ignore. In March 2011, a CinemaBlend preview of Insidious joked that the only person who could stop its demon was Magda, “maybe the scariest character of all-time.” The joke worked because readers knew her instantly.
Shaye’s performance is an early example of what she did best: play something extreme with a completely straight face. That skill later carried her from Farrelly comedies to one of horror’s best-known franchises.
Who Magda is
Peter and Bobby Farrelly directed the film, which Fox released on July 15, 1998. Cameron Diaz plays Mary, Ben Stiller plays Ted, who has never stopped loving her, and Matt Dillon plays the private detective Pat Healy. Magda is Mary’s friend and neighbor, and the film treats her as part of Mary’s world. Rotten Tomatoes describes her as an agoraphobic, widowed and faux-glamorous neighbor, and that summary fits.
She is also a useful measure of Mary herself. According to the Farrellys, Mary’s kindness is what makes the men around her act absurdly. It also shows in how she treats an eccentric friend like Magda.
Magda does not drive the plot, but she complicates it. In one thread, Pat and Norm, two of Mary’s suitors, try to sabotage Ted by drugging Magda’s dog with speed. That puts her and her dog, Puffy, in the middle of the film’s escalating mess.
Building the look
Magda’s appearance is a makeup-effects creation. Variety’s 20th-anniversary feature reported that Shaye spent four hours a day in the makeup chair to get Magda’s orange glow. Shaye has recalled that the Farrellys asked for a look like an old leather bag. Variety also noted that Magda’s $5,000 fright wig was stolen from the production.
The film’s reviewers noticed the effect. A review hosted by Ebertfest compares Magda’s tan to the process that makes Slim Jims. It calls the character funny in a bizarre, over-the-top way. Another critic called her skin leather-like.
Shaye and a dog called Slammer
Puffy was played by Slammer, a border terrier. Shaye told Variety that during one scene the dog licked a hole in her latex makeup, though the damage was off-camera and never shows on screen. She kept going, and Diaz was laughing so hard she was crying. Peter Farrelly called the moment “cinema gold” after yelling cut.
The way Shaye handled it is typical of her work. Magda is a cartoon on paper, but Shaye plays her as a woman devoted to her friend and her dog, so the jokes land without turning the character into a punchline.
Where it sat in her career
It was her third straight Farrelly film. Shaye had already played memorable characters in Dumb and Dumber (1994) and Kingpin (1996). Variety says that of all those parts, she is best known for Magda.
The wider film was a hit, and it keeps its place in comedy rankings. The American Film Institute put it 27th on its list of the funniest American movies, and Total Film readers voted it fourth-greatest comedy of all time in 2000.
From Magda to Elise Rainier
The change that defined Shaye’s later career came in 2010. She has said that Insidious writer Leigh Whannell and director James Wan had dinner at her house and told her they were trying to raise money for a small film. She read the script and called Wan the next day to say she wanted in. As the psychic Elise Rainier she became the heart of a franchise. She has said she never saw Elise as a heroine, and that the audience connected with her place in that world. The first film earned a ten-minute standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Her most recent Insidious film is Insidious: Out of the Further, directed by Jacob Chase, which opened on August 21, 2026, with Amelia Eve as a young mother who can bring demons out of the Further. Variety reported on August 26, 2026, that Shaye had written to Sony chief Tom Rothman to push for the film after it was pulled from the studio’s schedule. She also appeared in the horror comedy Scared to Death, released in March 2026. She says she has no plans to retire.
For Magda’s fans, the connection is easy to see. In both horror and comedy, Shaye commits fully, and audiences remember it.
