Alicia Silverstone in Clueless: The Alaïa Line and the Making of Cher Horowitz
“Oh no, you don’t understand, this is an Alaïa.” In the scene, Cher is left stranded outside a liquor store in a red fur-lined coat over a square-necked Alaïa dress. A man holds her at gunpoint, takes her phone and purse, and orders her facedown on the ground. She refuses to move. When he looks confused, she explains that Alaïa is “a totally important designer.”
It is the moment readers most often point to when they talk about Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz. The gag works because Silverstone plays it with complete sincerity: the stakes are a dress, and Cher treats them as a matter of principle.
Where she was before Cher
Silverstone was a teenager with a short résumé. She has said that The Crush was the first film she did, and that it led to her casting in Aerosmith music videos. She ended up making three of them. By her own account, everything she made before Clueless was a drama.
That is why the comic lead was a surprise even to her. She remembers asking her agent whether she could really do it, since she felt she wasn’t funny. Her agent answered that she was hilarious because she takes everything so seriously. That instinct became the core of the performance.
What the part asked of her
Amy Heckerling directed Clueless and wrote the screenplay, adapting Jane Austen’s novel Emma to Beverly Hills. Cher is a rich, meddling, well-meaning teenager who reshapes the lives of those around her before she works out her own. Heckerling has said she did not want Cher to be unintelligent, just someone who didn’t yet know what she didn’t know.
Silverstone’s job was to keep that gap between confidence and understanding funny without making Cher a joke. She did it with deadpan delivery, narration in Cher’s own voice, and a refusal to wink at the audience. Around her were Paul Rudd as Josh, Stacey Dash as Dionne, and Wallace Shawn as Mr. Hall, among others. Dash in particular supplies the friendship that keeps Cher grounded.
The look as craft
Fashion is how Cher reads the world, and the costumes carry the character. She has even digitized her wardrobe and computerized her closet. Costume designer Mona May told the New York Times she spotted the yellow plaid suit on a rack, and knew it was right the moment she saw Silverstone in it.
The Alaïa dress had to be real. May has said that even on a tight budget it mattered that Cher wore a genuine Alaïa in the mugging scene. She had to borrow one and alter it to fit Silverstone. Silverstone has joked about her own starting point: she has said she wore jeans and a T-shirt to her auditions leading up to Clueless.
What changed afterward
The role made her the face of mid-1990s teen comedy, but her later choices lean the other way. She has worked with Yorgos Lanthimos twice, on The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Bugonia. Deadline describes Bugonia as Academy Award-nominated, and notes she also executive produced the Netflix film A Merry Little Ex-Mas. Her drama Irish Blood returns for a second season on Acorn TV in January, she has said.
Her next film is a new one. Deadline reported on July 23, 2026 that she had joined Benny Safdie’s Lizard Music, a live-action/CGI adaptation of Daniel Pinkwater’s novel. She has since said that shooting has wrapped.
Cher in 2026
The Alaïa line has outlived the film. On March 4, 2026, Silverstone attended her first Alaïa show in Paris, which was creative director Pieter Mulier’s final show for the house. Asked by W Magazine what she was wearing, she answered, “I’m wearing an Alaïa, duh.”
Cher is also coming back. Paramount+ ordered a sequel series on July 30, 2026. Variety reported a six-episode order. The official logline has Cher successful in business and a mother, until her daughter’s high school years leave her feeling “clueless” again. Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage and Jordan Weiss write and executive produce, with Silverstone also an executive producer and Heckerling and original producer Robert Lawrence returning as executive producers. Silverstone told Boston.com that filming would start in January. Only Silverstone had been announced as cast at the time of the announcement.
On Sunday, October 18, 2026, she was due to watch the film with a live audience in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, as part of the New Hampshire Film Festival. She turned 50 on October 4, 2026. More than three decades on, Cher’s refusal to lie down in a parking lot is still the line people repeat.
