John Pyper-Ferguson is an Australian-born Canadian actor. He is best known for the Western Unforgiven (1992), for playing Jack Soloff on Suits (2015) and for playing Tex on The Last Ship (2014). He has more than 150 screen credits. His recent work includes Casa Grande (2023–2026), Beneath the Light (2025) and Angel and the Badman (2026).
John Pyper-Ferguson spent decades as a character actor and is especially associated with tough frontier types. He became a fan favorite in the rebooted Battlestar Galactica universe, where he played the corporate rival Tomas Vergis on Caprica (2010). John Pyper-Ferguson’s Canadian TV start and Hollywood films (1986–1990s)
John Pyper-Ferguson was born in Mordialloc, Australia, and raised in Vancouver, Canada. He began his career after earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance from the University of Alberta.
His first lead role was Sonny Hamilton on the Canadian prime-time drama Hamilton’s Quest (1986–1988). Sonny is a young man searching for his birth parents. In many of his early credits he was billed simply as John Ferguson.
John Pyper-Ferguson made his film debut with a small part in the horror sequel Prom Night II (1987). Bigger studio films soon followed: the Mel Gibson action comedy Bird on a Wire (1990) and Clint Eastwood’s Western Unforgiven (1992). On television, he played Peter Hutter on The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. (1993–1994). He also took roles in Hard Core Logo (1996) and The Tempest (1998).
